Ghillie Suit Empty
PostSubject: Ghillie Suit   Ghillie Suit EmptyMon Sep 01, 2008 3:30 pm

I was looking to either make a Ghillie suit or, buy one for me and my WELL L96 sniper rifle. So I'd like to either find some good instructions or somewhere to buy a good one.

You can either make your own, but first you have to start off with the basic materials.

so yets start with the sniper.

first you buy BURLAP. It is what makes up the part of the suit that looks like grass

For the gun I would use some sort of, net, something, like tarp, except bigger holes. pretty much on one side just put burlap on, to make it look like grass. the put it on the sniper, you will want to cut holes, for parts like the barell and make sure it doesnt obstruct the scope. You dont have to put on any on the cheek rest

Thanks, Now about the suit, I'd like it to be full body but last long, and have growing room.

This is tough I have never made my own, but Ill just say what I have saw. some people do the same as what I said for the sniper, and just like wrap it around your body, which I think doesnt work well. If you have a old large Shirt, cut slits into it, and use those as holes, to sew, glue, or however you attack the burlap to.

Ghillie Suit Empty
PostSubject: Re: Ghillie Suit   Ghillie Suit EmptyThu Sep 04, 2008 1:34 am

I have made my own and I can tell you a thing or two about the ghillie suit.

First off DO GET IT!

It will give you a tremendous edge in concealment!

As for whether to buy or build, let me just say from experience that both ways will probably come out equal in the end from a cost perspective.

Because this is your first, you'll go through a few different designs before you get it right and the cost savings from making it yourself will be basically off set by the cost of making mistakes on the right color burlap, threat, glue, netting etc...

If you buy I believe Bushrag makes some great products, though I have not bought their stuff. I have heard some good things about them.

If you plan to build your own I would recommend using a pair of BDUs as the basis. First off, you get the basic concealment from the camo pattern on the uniform and second, you get a very durable platform upon which to secure your ghillie material.

Next, you want to find some good TOUGH netting. I actually "Liberated" mine from an old basball diamond that had some old broken down batting cages with old netting draped everywhere.

The stuff has 1" diameter hols and is about 1/4" thick. This provides great durability and I can easily stuff leaves and other brush in to adapt the surroundings.

Now, if you can't find batting cage net try looking at your local army surplus store for some tough alternative. I really mean TOUGH, because this stuff needs to hold up to all kinds of abuse and WILL get stuck on every branch and thorn bush within a mile of your suit.

The burlap you cut into long rectangular (ish) strips and then you tie (Or glue) the strips to the BDU (If you dont use the netting) or the netting which is glued or sewn to the BDU.

Once the burlap is secured, you should shred SOME of the tips of each piece to break up the obvious fabric image.

This will form the basis for your suit. As you play you will incorporate new media such as leaves, vines even branches.

The whole idea is to break up the "Human form" to the human eye.

If it doesn't look human, chances are the opponent won't think that it is.

I have literally had people step on me while looking right at me bc it didn't click that the clump of leaves they were on was a person.

I even whistled at them just before they crunched down on me.

Of course you want to choose burlap that is of the approximate color of the area in which you play. Die can come into play if you can't find the right color, but be warned. DO NOT WASH THE SUIT IN THE WASHING MACHINE!

You will have tons of burlap and dye all over the place!

Finally, if you choose to go ghillie, remember the elements! Just because you look like a battle hardened Spec Ops soldier doesn't mean your conditioned like one.

No matter the time of year (Unless you live in the arctic) the Ghillie will be H O T!!!!!

So remember to bring lots of hydration! I would recommend a backpack style water bladder. (I actually saw one at Target for $30.00!)

Believe me its worth it! Also, for when things get really steaming, consider getting a small pocket fan. It may sound lame, but I cannot tell you how many times one of those little things helped me to keep from passing out.

Finally, if you go through the time camo yourself up, don't forget about your gun. Make sure to create (Or buy) a good gun wrap.

After all, even if the can't see you, they will still shot at your gun!

As has been suggested, there are some excellent resources across the web, but I have actually been there and done that so if you have any questions feel free to post them!

Regards,

Konrad

BTW,

I know Wisconsin winters are bone chillingly cold, but you can still sweat yourself into dehydration danger even in the dead of winter.

I know, I used to have to suffer through them...

First of all, guns dont have battle dress uniforms ^^^. I agree with Konrad that a gun wrap or a "Bushboa" is a great idea. I went all out on a custom paint job for my L96 (see pics section) but it wasn't until I added debris from the area I was playing that people stopped seeing my gun totally. It doesn't matter how good the paint job is, you will always spot it because of the lines of the gun's body. A chunky wrap with added foliage breaks up those smooth lines which is ideal for ghillie because that's the point of the suit along with blending into background shadow/color. Back OT, if you want to try to make your own suit, listen to Konrad and be prepared for some trial and error. I tried it and the end result sucked the first time. I ended up abandoning it because of the encumbrance and now am sticking to natural cover/hides like up in trees or being prone in thick bush. I did more recon as a sniper and less shooting so I didn't move around as much and yes, you will be hot without a breeze but wind messes your shot up so it was frustrating that way. Count that in with snags, perhaps loss of peripheral vision and restricted movement/quick access to on-body gear are all just some things to take into account when thinking about going ghillie. I'm less orthodox in my methods of playing the sniper so I felt a ghillie would be a hindrance. I hid in a river under a bent over tree chest deep in water for two hours spotting targets for the DM and a wet, heavy ghillie suit draped over me would not have been fun (but not hot, at least Smile ). I dont want to scare you out of getting a suit because I have known players who swear by them and literally disappear when they dont move (which is awesome) but it comes with cons that might only effect you based on your play style. If you have the money then sure buy one as you can mod it later and even use it as a template for future suits. If you don't like it you can always sell it or use it to hide an AEG in the field for when a full auto firefight finds you like I do with my old one.
